Gram Rabbit
Cultivation
Rating: 7.9
[Stinky; 2006; Electro-Americana maybe?]
Oh… hell… yes! Gram Rabbit, one of the most original sounding bands I’ve heard in a long time is back with a severely glammed out new version of their bizarre, psychadelic desert highway bar rock. After their delightful but disjointed debut, Music To Start A Cult To, the next chapter in the saga of “The Royal Order of Rabbits” has been written with a higher precision and direction. They’re anything but afraid of taking the unbeaten path along the way though.
The opener eases its way into your psyche, as would any good cult representative trying to recruit new members to its following; with slow, spacey guitars and Jesika von Rabbit’s creepy, yet welcoming vocals. But no sooner than the introduction has been made, you hear a strange phone message from a guy from the BBC that sounds cheery-evil like the cops in “A Clockwork Orange” trying to reach the rabbit then right into a bouncing 80s-ish “Bloody Bunnies”1. Following up is the mellow, dusty piano tune “Angel Song” and back into the Ween-ish filtered vocals (that mirror the keyboards) of “Charlie’s Kids”. Which asks what became of Charlie’s kids and his sperm bank. “Their scattered hearts among us now?” Because, you know, “they were spawn from LSD and hedonistic insanity”.
I know that doesn’t sound very “precision” and very “disjointed” as I said at the beginning. And while I’ve talked more about the bizarre tracks, they’re strategically placed and the exception, not the norm. They tempt you early on and keep you around to get their full message across, because at this point you don’t want to miss a thing. The second half of the album gets up to full speed and delivers a string of excellent and varied backdrops for Jesika’s teachings. From orchestral and lush to psych-rock tracks that would make great instrumentals. From marching tempos to soaring trances and finishing up with the ominous rhtyhm and the repeating, hushed whispers of “Hares Don’t Have Tea”. (name of song and what is repeatedly whispered)

1 This track isn’t a very good summary of their sound, but it’s one of their streams on their site, so hopefully they won’t mind you getting you’re preview track from us. Check out all of the streams here.

Uncle Jim
Superstars of Greenwich Meantime
Rating: 10
[Abduction; 2005 / reissue 2006; Spoken Word]
10! I think that’s the first time I have ever given anything a rating of 10. The closest anything has ever come was probably The Disintegration Loops and maybe Dub Side of The Moon or Rejoicing In The Hands. But this, this is something so completely out there it’s unbelievable. If you’re familiar with Sun City Girls, then you should know Uncle Jim (Alan Bishop). And if his rants get you off, here’s a whole record of them that you don’t want to miss.
For those of you not familiar with Uncle Jim, his biting words of dark humor roll off his tongue in a mix of Tom Waits smokiness and George Carlin pissed-off-ness crossed with the passion of a beat poet. All the while, he’s backed by guest musicians, including all of the Sun City Girls. The mood (or severity of the rant) is set perfectly by the backdrop of sounds. From slow metal riffage pushed way into the background on “Liberties” to the smokey lounge of “Foggy Lake of Swill” and “After Hours”.
One moment there’s a hip-hop-ish beat and delivery of highlight track “Graduation Day” with tongue lashing lyrics aimed at posers and hipsters, self-conscious “terminal cafe dwellers” with cell phones text messaging to feel important, encouraging smoking to people who really need a cigarette, pop culture and Hollywood and a great big “fuck off” to fine art and the coast of Texas and a final apology for being able to fix it all, “I just haven’t fuckin’ got the time.”
Then there’s also the quiet folkishness of the slowly thumping drums and softly strummed guitars of “Flashback” with it’s character-doing-a-character style not unlike Andy Kaufman doing Tony Clifton… but I don’t think it’s a character at all. It’s brilliant rant raps look at greed (in the form of a Yeti hunting tale) and keeping 10 or 12 cartons of cigarettes, you know, for an emergency, conspiracy, cheep labor and medications. But Uncle Jim doesn’t quite look at subjects like most normal people would… or would come right out and say, at least. “My doctor said to take 2 Percosets every 4 hours, but I decided to take 4 Percosets every two hours, guys.”
This isn’t exactly the kind of record you absorb in one sitting, but it’s also so relentless that you won’t listen to it often enough to get burned out on. I’ve been playing the shit out of this for a few days, but I’ve gotta turn it off now.
If I would have heard this at it’s original vinyl pressing last year, it would’ve knocked somebody out of my 2005 top ten list.

Time
Before There Was…
Rating: 7.3
[Shadoks; 2005; Psych Rock]
As with nearly almost every release from the highly ambitious masters of the re-issue, Shadoks Music, this isn’t going to be the kind of vintage rock you’ll find yourself saying “Hey, I know that song!” as you listen. Even the band name, Time, isn’t going to ring a bell considering this was recorded in 1968 and has never seen a single pressing, until now that is. And while there is many a recording that never sees the light of day for good reason, this is proof positive that there is also valuable material that the world hasn’t forgotten, but never knew about in the first place.
While there is nothing exactly fluid or consistant about the album as a whole, there are plenty of enlightening, folkish jams and acid-fueled freakouts to make this a worthy addition to any hardcore collector of old school psychedelic rock. Opener, “A Song For You”, is a mellow, harpsichord-esque synth-heavy love song immediately followed by 40 second lute melody only to lead into the fuzzed out, manic hysteria of “Introductory Lines”. Which is completed with it’s awkwardly placed spoken word “White Boy’s Rap” about such things as “cornucopias full of mirrors” that “reflect outside in” over metal trash can-y percussion.
So continues the haphazard pace and arrangement of tracks that play as more of a collection of random thoughts than a thoroughly considered final product. “Sad Benjamin” flows with a pleasing beach party psych sound with a dose of British Invasion pop that is that is worthy of cult status. “At Shadow’s Eve” kicks the hippy sound to the curb with an off kilter Brit punk stomp and filtered riffs while “Ma’s Pan” is bluegrass plucked out at a rapid pace with a front porch stomp.
If you’ve gotten into any of the other gems Shadoks has unearthed and we’ve covered in the past such as Born Again and Lula Cortez, or if you’re a serious fan of vintage, rare psychedelia, check out Time, and Shadoks in general. Great stuff to be found.
