Dub Spencer & Trance Hill

Dub Spencer & Trance Hill
Nitro

[Echo Beach; 2006; Dub]

From the always solid German dub label, Echo Beach, comes a Swiss trio with some serious, psychedelic reggae grooves. Managing to come up with an original sounding dub record must be next to impossible, so to stand out among the crowd, you don’t have to be louder or more inventive, you just have to be better. And with the warm, organic instrumentation, Nitro holds its own with the competition. The overall sound is a more traditional one. Hypnotic and pulsating rather than sterile or dancey - and that’s a positive thing to me. Not that there aren’t plenty of trippy electronic sounds. There are. But they nicely compliment the internal organ-vibrating bass and live keys, sax and percussion. The band members - having all played with a variety of bands - bring an intimate, jam session feel to the tracks. And of course there’s plenty of echo and reverb to offset the trance so you can pay attention as the tracks unfold and slowly play out… or just close your eyes and get lost in them. And being able to get lost in record is really about all it takes to be at least worthwhile, or a true standout if you’re in the mood for a laid-back summer groove.

So don’t let the western themed artwork fool you. This shit’s no joke. Just check out the shuffling drums and smokey sax on “Halleluja”…

Sugar Minott

Sugar Minott
The Roots Lover 1978-1983
Rating: 9.3
[Moll -Selekta; 2006; Reggae]

If the updated dub-flavored stylings of Up, Bustle & Out I talked about the other day isn’t your thing. If you’re more of a traditional roots-reggae purist. If you’re a true lover of reggae, not the kind of reggae fan whose collection only runs as deep as Bob Marley’s Legend compilation, this is a dual-disc that should be considered an essential addition to musical stash. Following up the excellent Bunny Lee Rock Steady collection we talked about a while back, Moll-Selekta has once again made it easy for you to expand your knowledge of the roots of Jamaican music.

This collection of Minott’s best 7 and 12 inches, A B-sides and extended versions (that I would guess to be otherwise impossible to come by) along with extensive liner notes should enlighten a whole new population of music fans, young and old, with a deep passion or just a mild affinity for reggae, with the sweet, soft voice that earned him the name “Sugar” (although he claims the name stemmed from his childhood fondness of candy). I have to admit, I’m not especially schooled in reggae music, so I don’t have a handful of music snob-ish obscure references to throw at you that would most likely be meaningless if I did. All you really need to know is that this is some of the finest moments in reggae music. And considering Bob Marley declared Minott as one of his favorite singers, my recommendation sounds like a “uh, yeah… me too”.

Oh well… uh, yeah… I love it too!

Up, Bustle & Out

Up, Bustle & Out
City Breakers - 18 Frames Per Second
Rating: 7.8
[Collision; 2006; Reggae / Dub / Hip-Hop]

A new reggae record that’s worth a shit is kinda hard to come by these days, but the old school Ninja Tune-ers Up, Bustle & Out are back with a solid new full length on the dub-heavy Collision label. UBO brings contemporary beats and dub grooves but doesn’t sacrifice the fundamental 70s Jamaican sound. From song structure and messages (of protest, spirituality and hope) to traditional instruments and equipment, a hat is more than tipped, rather removed while bowing to the originating 70s producers of Jamaica.

That being said, it’s far from a copycat sound. UBO’s sound is more lush and complex than most reggae classics which creates more of a reinvention than a revolution. Hip-hop elements and heavy bass nestle amidst organic snares, cymbals, congas and bongos. Space-y samples converse with tight horns. Record scratches compliment rather than detract from warm, Latin-ish strings. Instrumentals are interspersed with select guest vocals by MC Blaze, Ras Jabulani from Black Roots and DJ Mexican. Call it nu-reggae I guess, but whatever you call it, it makes me need a Jamaican vacation really bad…
