I’m sure almost everybody is familiar with The Internet Archive at this point. But if not, it’s a massive, ever-growing library of non-commercial and public domain media. If you’ve ever started digging through the live show recordings, you’ll know there is a lot to choose from. And if you get addicted, you’re going to need a bigger hard drive…
Some sets are audience recordings and some are from the soundboards so the quality ranges from pretty poor to quite excellent. And speaking of hard drives, I got a new 200 gig-er, so I’ve got some downloading to do! That brings me to a new feature coming your way from time to time when I come across an especially good show that I think you should hear. So let’s get on with our first show pick…

Silver Mt. Zion
Live at La Sala Rossa, Montreal
June 16, 2005
As a nice companion to the newest Silver Mt. Zion record we finally covered, this show from last summer is a very good audience recording and includes a mix of songs from Horses In The Sky and older material. So get to downloading this one and we’ll gradually sift through the rest of the SMZ shows and bring you some more choice picks down the road.

Silver Mt. Zion
Horses In The Sky

[Constellation; 2005; Post-Rock/Folk]
I know I said I was a little late on that Gregor Samsa record, but this one’s been out even longer. It’s one I really should have already been on top of, but it’s been in my rotation again so I need to show some love and respect to Silver Mt. Zion.
With this release, Godspeed! You Black Emperor guitarist Efrim and his band actually cross over into more primitive, dark and apocalyptic folk sounds with a heavy emphasis on vocals rather than the soaring instrumentals you normally associate with “Post-Rock”. But that’s not to say they’ve turned to traditionally structured, 3-minute songs. Not one of them is under 6 1/2 minutes which gives them all plenty of time to slowly swell or expand and contract multiple times throughout a track. Although the overall sound is more stripped down than previous releases, you’ll find layers of everything from violin and cello to distorted guitars and feedback.
Another release to satisfy fans of the extended GYBE family and further solidify my love for Constellation Records. Recommended if: You think a brand of folk that’s slower and heavier than Akron / Family sounds good.

Gregor Samsa
55:12

[The Kora Records; 2006; Post-Rock]
I’ve been on a bit of a post-rock kick lately. Maybe it’s because it goes so nicely with the warm Texas evenings. Or maybe it’s because I’d choose atmospherics over riffage anyday. Whatever the case may be, I can always stand to listen to some Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Tortoise or Bark Psychosis, but sometimes new bands that loosely fall under the “Post-Rock” umbrella take a little warming up to. There are a couple however that I’ve been meaning to tip you off to*. The first being Gregor Samsa’s full length debut, 55:12.
They have more variety than many of their fellow genre-mates, but not to the point that they lose direction. Their use of rock instrumentation in a decidely un-rock manner undoubtedly ties them to a genre that many are post-tired-of, but their gentle fluctuation between deep and dark and soft and spacious combined with the lulling boy/girls vocals finds a happy place in my headphones. It’s like a fresh bud has sprouted along a dying branch of the genre tree… somewhere between Mogwai and the tip where the sun is still shining on it.
*I’ve been a little behind on this one, it came out earlier this spring, but it’s the perfect lazy summer soundtrack.

Sickoakes
Seawards
Rating: 9.0
[Type; 2006; (Orchestral) Post-Rock]
I should’ve had this one for you yesterday. It’s the perfect Monday-morning-office-zoning-out record. And not in the ambient, classical or mind-numbing kind of zoning out. The soaring, orchestral post-rock kind that makes your stack of work seem a tiny bit smaller.
After the 2003 net release of the 3 part, 15 minute epic “Wedding Rings & Bullets In The Same Golden Shrine” (see link below), many have been waiting for this proper full length debut, and if I would have heard it before, I would’ve been one of the most anxious of them all. I love a good post-rock record and when one comes across as fresh, it says a lot. And while Wedding Rings… will satisfy those who prefer an experimental slant to their instrumental rock, Seawards comes across as a fully realized vision. It flows better as a whole record than Wedding Rings… does as a single track.
Opener “Driftwood”, is a somber introduction of floating, delicate and weeping instrumentation (that expresses more emotion than most singers voices) to the first of 3 tracks that clock in at over 10 minutes each, “Taking The Stairs Instead Of The Elevator”. It’s a slowly soaring journey through echo-y guitars, glockenspiels and marching drums. More like the sound of someone taking the stairs because they have nothing to look forward to getting to instead of taking them for the cardio workout. “Oceans On Hold”, the next 10 minute-er is a more manic warm-up for the new marathon reworking of “Wedding Rings…” (Parts 1 and 2) that will span almost 30 minutes together later on in the record. “Missles And Mammals” (download below) is the shortest of all tracks and a condensed peek at their sound construction style in it’s least drastic form.
This new version of Wedding Rings… slowly builds from a droning tone into a layered but minimal trance adding subtle changes that creep instead of leap (in part 1) and into the beautiful, theatrical masterpiece that is Part 2. The sound is lush and pristine. Heavily layered but maticulously orchestrated. Morphing and evolving continously, slightly at times and substantially at others, there is more than eonough to justify its running time. Many bands would be happy to leave this one track as their mark on the world, but hopefully these six Swedes aren’t satisfied yet. I’ll now be in the crowd awaiting their next release.
And oh well, so it’s Tuesday… it’ll make a great any-day-of-the-week record and if you order it now, you should have it for next Monday morning. And the next. And the next…

Geoff Farina, Luther Gray, Dan Littleton
New Salt
Rating: 8.1
[Xeng; 2005; Post-Rock / Jazz]
After collaborating at several European art festivals, performing live scores to silent films, Geoff Farina (Karate), Dan Littleton (Ida) and Luther Gray have released an amazing debut that treads the ground between soaring post-rock and improv jazz. Along with Zu’s The Way Of The Animal Powers, the Xeng label has released two mind-blowing, genre-bending, avant jazz bastard children. However while Zu explored the harder, metallic side of free jazz, New Salt drifts into the hazy, psychedelic, space rock territory.
Opener, Harmonia, starts the album with a droney buzz, giving you the feeling of standing below a neon bar sign on a silent, cold, drizzling night. Gray’s sporadic beats usher the track along steadily, but at the pace of a drunken patron with no place to go, while Farina’s precisely placed guitar interjections form peaks and valleys of stimulation and sedation. Immediately following is the epic (nearly 14 minute) title track that builds from hypnotic reverberating guitars and hyperactive cymbals dancing at the pace of a secretary’s keyboard, to experimental noise and distorted guitar rock riffs that never let you get too comfortable in the track, but successfully justify it’s running time. Song for Che is the centerpiece that captures the essence of the New Salt sound. Nearly all elements to be found within the record are contained in this collection of tiny explosives that produce much more bang than they should. Couch Arizona’s strolling pace begins to usher you out of the hyperkinetic jazz experiment and into the slumber-inducing closer, Pouring Water on Stone. As the waves of the droney backbone meet slowly swelling guitars and soft, heartbeat paced clicks, the final punctuation is placed on a record that is comfortably familiar (but not regurgitated) and at the same time pleasantly fresh.
