Reissue Goodness! part 2

Moonkyte
Count Me Out
Rating: 8.3
[1971 / 2006; psych-folk]

Continuing in the far out psychedelic side of folk is Moonkyte. And in fact, it’s more psych than it is folk. And considering this, their lone album was endorsed by (and had original liner notes written by) John Peel in 1971, who else do you really need to suggest it to you? Just consider this one included in the list of required listening for fans of late 60s early 70s acid-folk. Especially British acid-folk.

Gordon Jackson
Thinking Back
Rating: 7.8
[1969 / 2006; psych-folk]

For fans of Traffic, this is an eluvise missing piece to their collection that is finally widely available. Not that it’s a Traffic album, but Gordon Jackson’s 1969 album features all of the members including Jim Capaldi on drums and Dave Mason on bass (or slide or electric guitar) throughout. Steve Winwood (on bass and piano) and Chris Wood (on flutes and sax) appear on various tracks as well. Other notable collaborators include Jim King and Ric Grech of Family (soprano sax and bass), Julie Driscoll, The Blossom Toes, Meic Stevens, Reg King (backing vocals) and many others who all contribute to the well developed and rich jazz and world music flavored folk.

Terry Smith
Fall Out
Rating: 8.2
[1968 / 2006; Jazz]

Finally, winding down this group of excellent selections from Sunbeam is Terry Smith’s (lead guitarist of jazz-rock legends If) solo debut of groovy, and at times Latin flavored, jazz standards and originals. My taste in jazz normally leans toward the free form improv jam modern style, but this is just the right balance of relaxing and upbeat that I can throw on as background music anytime, and for fans and collectors of traditional jazz, this will be a more than a satisfying find.

Hip shit daddy-o.

Uncle

Uncle Jim
Superstars of Greenwich Meantime
Rating: 10
[Abduction; 2005 / reissue 2006; Spoken Word]

10! I think that’s the first time I have ever given anything a rating of 10. The closest anything has ever come was probably The Disintegration Loops and maybe Dub Side of The Moon or Rejoicing In The Hands. But this, this is something so completely out there it’s unbelievable. If you’re familiar with Sun City Girls, then you should know Uncle Jim (Alan Bishop). And if his rants get you off, here’s a whole record of them that you don’t want to miss.

For those of you not familiar with Uncle Jim, his biting words of dark humor roll off his tongue in a mix of Tom Waits smokiness and George Carlin pissed-off-ness crossed with the passion of a beat poet. All the while, he’s backed by guest musicians, including all of the Sun City Girls. The mood (or severity of the rant) is set perfectly by the backdrop of sounds. From slow metal riffage pushed way into the background on “Liberties” to the smokey lounge of “Foggy Lake of Swill” and “After Hours”.

One moment there’s a hip-hop-ish beat and delivery of highlight track “Graduation Day” with tongue lashing lyrics aimed at posers and hipsters, self-conscious “terminal cafe dwellers” with cell phones text messaging to feel important, encouraging smoking to people who really need a cigarette, pop culture and Hollywood and a great big “fuck off” to fine art and the coast of Texas and a final apology for being able to fix it all, “I just haven’t fuckin’ got the time.”

Then there’s also the quiet folkishness of the slowly thumping drums and softly strummed guitars of “Flashback” with it’s character-doing-a-character style not unlike Andy Kaufman doing Tony Clifton… but I don’t think it’s a character at all. It’s brilliant rant raps look at greed (in the form of a Yeti hunting tale) and keeping 10 or 12 cartons of cigarettes, you know, for an emergency, conspiracy, cheep labor and medications. But Uncle Jim doesn’t quite look at subjects like most normal people would… or would come right out and say, at least. “My doctor said to take 2 Percosets every 4 hours, but I decided to take 4 Percosets every two hours, guys.”

This isn’t exactly the kind of record you absorb in one sitting, but it’s also so relentless that you won’t listen to it often enough to get burned out on. I’ve been playing the shit out of this for a few days, but I’ve gotta turn it off now.

If I would have heard this at it’s original vinyl pressing last year, it would’ve knocked somebody out of my 2005 top ten list.

Catching Up - Random Coolness Edition

Since I didn’t get through all the great records that I had hoped to, I’ll throw one of these “catching up” posts in from time to time, but since it’s Friday, here’s a collection of cool records that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Except they’re really good…

Mahi Mahi
(Re)Move Your Body
[Corleone; 2005; Electro-Rock]

Mahi Mahi’s (Re)Move Your Body moved from the danciness and into darker territory. Glammed out, slick electronic knob twistery mixed with digital and organic industrial percussion topped off with filtered vocals. And plenty of bass to give the little 10 inch sub in my Jeep a serious workout. What more could I possibly want in a record? Excellent.

Neotropic
White Rabbits
[Mush; 2004; Instrumental Rock]

Neotropic’s move to Mush Records continues her move towards a drifting, almost post-rock sound. Beautiful piano notes float above minimal electronic loops. Weeping guitars dance with sparse samples of found sound and environmental recordings. A warm ambient soundtrack to a cool spring evening… and an excellent fit with Mush’s collection of innovative artists.

Joseph Malik
Aquarius Songs
[Compost; 2005; Jazz]

Aquarius Songs plays like a collection of some of the best jazz, samba, tango and soul songs ever - remixed by a master party-starting DJ. But that’s only half correct. Malik gets the party started and your ass on the floor, but these are his new creations, not classics mined from record shop basements. Some of it is a little dance-y for my taste, but the jazzier tracks more than make up for any of the others that I have to skip.

Spaghetti Western
Do Right By People
[Adonis; 2004; Instrumental]

Judging by the name and cover artwork, you would probably assume that this is a country record. If you skipped it because of that, you’d be sorely missing out on a great, very unique record. It does have many traditionally country instruments, but they’re played at times with a soaring, psychedelic quality. Guitars, banjo, pedal steel (always a bonus), pianos, organs, vibraphone, mandolin, fiddle, upright bass combined with “junkyard percussion” and drum programming, folk and bluegrass influences, to create an instrumental record with substance. At some points throughout the record, I want to give it a new genre name… like ambient country or something.

Simply Good Music

Various Artists
Vol. 1 - Rating: 7.3
Vol. 2 - Rating: 7.8
[Giant Step; Soulful Eclectic]

Yesterday’s mention of Giant Step Records reminded me that I had a couple of label sampler type compilations they put out last year and earlier this year that really deserved some attention that I failed to give them. So here they are now. Taking their name from President and co-founder of Giant Step, Maurice Bernstein’s response when asked to define the sound of his label… Simply Good Music. And an accurate description it is. While most of the artists, and tracks here, lean towards a groovy R&B sound, there is no clear genre that is concentrated on, and apparently none that are descriminated against either.

Opening the first volume is Esthero’s sexy vocals, spacey electronic elements and ass-shaking beat (that melts into it’s Latin groove interlude / mid-section and back again) on O.G. Bitch. The land of abstract hip-hop is represented by Roots Manuva’s The Haunting. Amp Fiddler brings the hottest of the gettin’ laid music with the sensual groove I Believe In You. Oi Va Voi provides an exceptional standout track with the upbeat, Latin-ish rhythm and warm strings of Refugee. Agent K breaks up the pace with the disco-funk-ish Betcha Did. While the overall highlight is Carl Craig’s dancey remix of Zap Mama’s Bandy Bandy, a fairly accurate overview of the label as a whole is presented even though it is a little heavy on the R&B slow jam side for my personal preference.

Volume 2 picks up where the first left off, and manages to step it up a notch or two in terms of track selection and variety. Highlights include retro-soul meets female hip-hop stylings Your Day Is Done by Platinum Pied Pipers featuring Georgia, the dub-ish Reggaetron remix of the samba burner Esto Es Lo Que Hay by Los Amigos Invisibles and Plant Life’s Appreciate that plays like Prince translated through Sly & The Family Stone with a pinch of Harlem Underground - again interspersed with a healthy dosage of mellow slow jams.

Giant Step is definitely a label to check out if you’re into R&B grooves and sipping champagne while swooning a lady, but would like a little more kick than that late night radio show with the Al Green-sounding jock.
