And considering this, their lone album was endorsed by (and had original liner notes written by) John Peel in 1971, who else do you really need to suggest it to you? Just consider this one included in the list of required listening for fans of late 60s early 70s acid-folk. Especially British acid-folk.

For fans of Traffic, this is an eluvise missing piece to their collection that is finally widely available. Not that it’s a Traffic album, but Gordon Jackson’s 1969 album features all of the members including Jim Capaldi on drums and Dave Mason on bass (or slide or electric guitar) throughout. Steve Winwood (on bass and piano) and Chris Wood (on flutes and sax) appear on various tracks as well. Other notable collaborators include Jim King and Ric Grech of Family (soprano sax and bass), Julie Driscoll, The Blossom Toes, Meic Stevens, Reg King (backing vocals) and many others who all contribute to the well developed and rich jazz and world music flavored folk.

Finally, winding down this group of excellent selections from Sunbeam is Terry Smith’s (lead guitarist of jazz-rock legends If) solo debut of groovy, and at times Latin flavored, jazz standards and originals. My taste in jazz normally leans toward the free form improv jam modern style, but this is just the right balance of relaxing and upbeat that I can throw on as background music anytime, and for fans and collectors of traditional jazz, this will be a more than a satisfying find.
Hip shit daddy-o.

Alif Tree’s new record is the cure to what ails me after a days work… leaving the office only to join in the rush hour traffic. It’s the kind of electronica that soothes the soul and calms the nerves. It’s more organic than digital. Heavy on the jazz, it makes you close your eyes instead of get up and dance. The swaying grooves, trip-hop beats and world rhythm mix with a touch of urban hustle into a hazy flow like ice cold water drizzled over organic sugar cubes into a fine absinthe. Which isn’t exactly the culinary recommendations given by Alif with each song… and yes, there are suggestions next to each track. Hence, French Cuisine.
In terms of a sound you’re familiar with, imagine jazz classics remixed with a Zero7 flavor. With vocals supplied by the likes of Shirley Horn, Anna Karina, Nina Simone, David Linx, Ana Carril and Maurice el Medioni over backdrops that shuffle along at a mellow, down-tempo pace, this is not your punk-ass kid neighbor’s electronica.

After collaborating at several European art festivals, performing live scores to silent films, Geoff Farina (Karate), Dan Littleton (Ida) and Luther Gray have released an amazing debut that treads the ground between soaring post-rock and improv jazz. Along with Zu’s The Way Of The Animal Powers, the Xeng label has released two mind-blowing, genre-bending, avant jazz bastard children. However while Zu explored the harder, metallic side of free jazz, New Salt drifts into the hazy, psychedelic, space rock territory.
Opener, Harmonia, starts the album with a droney buzz, giving you the feeling of standing below a neon bar sign on a silent, cold, drizzling night. Gray’s sporadic beats usher the track along steadily, but at the pace of a drunken patron with no place to go, while Farina’s precisely placed guitar interjections form peaks and valleys of stimulation and sedation. Immediately following is the epic (nearly 14 minute) title track that builds from hypnotic reverberating guitars and hyperactive cymbals dancing at the pace of a secretary’s keyboard, to experimental noise and distorted guitar rock riffs that never let you get too comfortable in the track, but successfully justify it’s running time. Song for Che is the centerpiece that captures the essence of the New Salt sound. Nearly all elements to be found within the record are contained in this collection of tiny explosives that produce much more bang than they should. Couch Arizona’s strolling pace begins to usher you out of the hyperkinetic jazz experiment and into the slumber-inducing closer, Pouring Water on Stone. As the waves of the droney backbone meet slowly swelling guitars and soft, heartbeat paced clicks, the final punctuation is placed on a record that is comfortably familiar (but not regurgitated) and at the same time pleasantly fresh.

The Way Of The Animal Powers

At fist glance you may think this is another metal record with great artwork and shitty music, and there are some hard-core elements at work here, but “shitty” doesn’t describe a single thing about Rome-based Zu’s explosive free jazz meets avant-rock sound. Quite the opposite. This collaboration with cellist Fred Lomberg-Holm proves, upon first listen, to be some of the most innovative, evocative instrumental music to be found anywhere.
Opener Tom Araya Is Our Elvis does in fact play in a grinding, industrial metal way that shows a jazz quartet could actually be influenced by something as unrelated as Slayer’s vocalist/bassist and produce a cello-smashing success. As the track nears the end, brief pauses break up the cycles and Anatomy of a Lost Battle begins with the same amount of space blending in a manner that seems like the same track is only exploring a different angle. The spoken word sample present takes this one into an even more experimental realm providing a highlight track among a highlight record. The sound, being a fairly grueling listen, gets slightly repitituous as some tracks stumble into each other. Fortunately tracks such as the psychedelic, atmospheric The Aftermath, the steady, marching drums and jazzy groove of The Witch Herbalist of the Remote Town, the minimalistic construction of A Fortress Against Shadows and the distortion and hammering drums of lone vocal track Every Seagull Knows provide plenty of freshness in an over-the-top sound that, in the hands of many, could have easily gone stale quicker than “day old” bread.
Traditional jazz instruments are transformed into brutal devices of sonic mayhem in the form of Jacopo Battaglia’s thundering, domineering drums, Massimo Pupillo’s blistering, vaguely Primus-esque bass, Luca Mai’s dark, sinister baritone and alto sax and Lomberg-Holms punishing pulls across the cello strings. Required listening for the adventurous-type music fiend.
