Since I didn’t get through all the great records that I had hoped to, I’ll throw one of these “catching up” posts in from time to time, but since it’s Friday, here’s a collection of cool records that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Except they’re really good…
Mahi Mahi
(Re)Move Your Body
[Corleone; 2005; Electro-Rock]
Mahi Mahi’s (Re)Move Your Body moved from the danciness and into darker territory. Glammed out, slick electronic knob twistery mixed with digital and organic industrial percussion topped off with filtered vocals. And plenty of bass to give the little 10 inch sub in my Jeep a serious workout. What more could I possibly want in a record? Excellent.

Neotropic
White Rabbits
[Mush; 2004; Instrumental Rock]
Neotropic’s move to Mush Records continues her move towards a drifting, almost post-rock sound. Beautiful piano notes float above minimal electronic loops. Weeping guitars dance with sparse samples of found sound and environmental recordings. A warm ambient soundtrack to a cool spring evening… and an excellent fit with Mush’s collection of innovative artists.

Joseph Malik
Aquarius Songs
[Compost; 2005; Jazz]
Aquarius Songs plays like a collection of some of the best jazz, samba, tango and soul songs ever - remixed by a master party-starting DJ. But that’s only half correct. Malik gets the party started and your ass on the floor, but these are his new creations, not classics mined from record shop basements. Some of it is a little dance-y for my taste, but the jazzier tracks more than make up for any of the others that I have to skip.

Spaghetti Western
Do Right By People
[Adonis; 2004; Instrumental]
Judging by the name and cover artwork, you would probably assume that this is a country record. If you skipped it because of that, you’d be sorely missing out on a great, very unique record. It does have many traditionally country instruments, but they’re played at times with a soaring, psychedelic quality. Guitars, banjo, pedal steel (always a bonus), pianos, organs, vibraphone, mandolin, fiddle, upright bass combined with “junkyard percussion” and drum programming, folk and bluegrass influences, to create an instrumental record with substance. At some points throughout the record, I want to give it a new genre name… like ambient country or something.

Friends of Dean Martinez
Lost Horizon - Rating: 8.4
Live at Club 2- Rating: 8.1
[Aero; 2005; Instrumental]
Bill Elm of Friends of Dean Martinez is quoted as saying, “Maybe there’s not much to be said about an instrumental album”. As a writer, it is particularly difficult to find words to paint an accurate picture of an instrumental record, but when it comes to FODM and these two exceptional albums recently released, something has to be said. Lost Horizon, FODM’s most deliberate and cohesive album to date, is a captivating brand of soaring post-rock led by Elm’s melodic steel guitar confidently supported by Mike Semple on guitar and Andrew Gerfers on drums. (No guests invited along for the ride this time.)
While plenty of musical territory is covered with stylistic elements of each track ranging from hypnotic soundscapes, such as opener Landfall, to the somber, marching drums of Somewhere Over The Waves, from the twangy, wailing steel guitar of All In The Golden Afternoon to the metallic distortion of Hidden Out Of Sight, a delicate balance is achieved flawlessly. Variety as well as cohesiveness. Not an easy task, especially when you are relying solely on instrumentation and no vocals to help provide the variety and interest. Perhaps the best 40 minutes you’ll spend (repeatedly) with a single record this year.
Preceding this new studio record was this summer’s release of the excellent, double bang for your buck live 2-disc set, Live at Club 2. The first disc was recorded live at Club 2 (Munich) in 2001 and the other is a show in Berlin at Magnet in 2004. With right at 2 hours of live Friends of Dean Martinez you can’t go wrong. Both albums are coming at you highly recommended, both for long-time devotees as well as those looking for some background music that doesn’t fade into the background.

Feathers
Absolute Noon
Rating: 8.3
[Hometapes; 2005; Instrumental]
While I’m most compelled to talk about opener and highlight, My Apple Has Four Legs, that’s today’s download (provided by Hometapes themselves) so you can check it out for yourself. No need for me to describe how amazing it’s composition and transitions are…
And by saying that, I don’t mean to distract from the rest of the tracks. With the exception of the strangely out of place, 50 second Coffee Bean (with it’s droney foundation and light blips) overall, Feathers (Eddie Alonso, Matt Crum and Eric Rasco) has created a solid first installation of a three part EP series.
There is plenty of variety among tracks, as well as within each track, to keep you tightly focused on the complex arrangements and layers of sound coming from strings, flute, brass, harpsicord, farfisa organ, electric sitar, cello, bass clarinet, bass harmonica, trombone, a pinch of electronics and a healthy dose of processing.
It sounds somewhat like what I would imagine as a Beach Boys symphony as composed by Architecture In Helsinki.
