With a new fresh face comes a new motivation to improve upon what you provided the day before. Or at least it keeps you from becoming too comfortable. Aside from the albums we review and preview tracks we post, there is a world of music available on the net, and sometimes only available as a download. So as a new feature, we plan to gather a little playlist of tracks to throw into the mix for your weekend adventures, so they’ll most likely lean towards electronic and hip-hop.

The Return of Dr. Octagon
…Rob accelerates, pushing 70 mph, trying to escape this madman insisting on a dangerous high-speed chase. The truck changes left, then right, then back again trying to overtake Rob’s vehicle. He glances at the gas tank gauge on his dashboard - It’s getting close to empty. Rob is surprised; he distinctly remembers filling up just earlier that day. Rob searches for a truck stop but there doesn’t seem to be any in sight. Bam! The truck hits him again.
He turns back, “What the ?!? Is that a gorilla??”
For a bit of storytelling, something like Tom Waits filtered through electro-hop, download A Gorilla Driving A Pick-Up Truck (Rob Sonic Road Rage Remix)
The rest of the list:
The first new stuff I’ve heard from Dani Siciliano since her exceptional debut, Likes… is this glitchy remix of Roisin Murphy’s “If We’re In Love”
Roisin Murphy - If We’re In Love (Dani Siciliano’s What Will Be Will Be Remix)
A bangin’ 15 minute mix of Mr. Lif’s Mo Mega by DJ Big Wiz
DJ Wiz - Mo Mega Mix
And if nothing else, DO NOT miss these remixes from The Decipher Series
Mike Relm’s 20 minute Return of Dr Octagon megamix
Al Green (The Gray Kid Al Greezy remix)
Ants - The Money Fight Remix (The Money Fight is Marc of Her Space Holiday and Hanni el Khatib)

Up, Bustle & Out
City Breakers - 18 Frames Per Second
Rating: 7.8
[Collision; 2006; Reggae / Dub / Hip-Hop]
A new reggae record that’s worth a shit is kinda hard to come by these days, but the old school Ninja Tune-ers Up, Bustle & Out are back with a solid new full length on the dub-heavy Collision label. UBO brings contemporary beats and dub grooves but doesn’t sacrifice the fundamental 70s Jamaican sound. From song structure and messages (of protest, spirituality and hope) to traditional instruments and equipment, a hat is more than tipped, rather removed while bowing to the originating 70s producers of Jamaica.
That being said, it’s far from a copycat sound. UBO’s sound is more lush and complex than most reggae classics which creates more of a reinvention than a revolution. Hip-hop elements and heavy bass nestle amidst organic snares, cymbals, congas and bongos. Space-y samples converse with tight horns. Record scratches compliment rather than detract from warm, Latin-ish strings. Instrumentals are interspersed with select guest vocals by MC Blaze, Ras Jabulani from Black Roots and DJ Mexican. Call it nu-reggae I guess, but whatever you call it, it makes me need a Jamaican vacation really bad…

Now, I can’t vouch for these records because I haven’t heard the full album, but it is good to know a couple of my favorites from back in the day are still alive and kickin’. I can say KRS is still in fine form.
“In school they never taught bout hamburgers or steak,
Elijah muhammed or the welfare state.
But I know.
And I know because of krs-one.
Yeah and I know and I know because of krs-one.
Because he’s droppin science,
Droppin history with a whole leap of style and intelligency
Yes, I know.
I know because of krs-one yeah,
And I know I know because of krs-one.”
