With a new fresh face comes a new motivation to improve upon what you provided the day before. Or at least it keeps you from becoming too comfortable. Aside from the albums we review and preview tracks we post, there is a world of music available on the net, and sometimes only available as a download. So as a new feature, we plan to gather a little playlist of tracks to throw into the mix for your weekend adventures, so they’ll most likely lean towards electronic and hip-hop.

The Return of Dr. Octagon
…Rob accelerates, pushing 70 mph, trying to escape this madman insisting on a dangerous high-speed chase. The truck changes left, then right, then back again trying to overtake Rob’s vehicle. He glances at the gas tank gauge on his dashboard - It’s getting close to empty. Rob is surprised; he distinctly remembers filling up just earlier that day. Rob searches for a truck stop but there doesn’t seem to be any in sight. Bam! The truck hits him again.
He turns back, “What the ?!? Is that a gorilla??”
For a bit of storytelling, something like Tom Waits filtered through electro-hop, download A Gorilla Driving A Pick-Up Truck (Rob Sonic Road Rage Remix)
The rest of the list:
The first new stuff I’ve heard from Dani Siciliano since her exceptional debut, Likes… is this glitchy remix of Roisin Murphy’s “If We’re In Love”
Roisin Murphy - If We’re In Love (Dani Siciliano’s What Will Be Will Be Remix)
A bangin’ 15 minute mix of Mr. Lif’s Mo Mega by DJ Big Wiz
DJ Wiz - Mo Mega Mix
And if nothing else, DO NOT miss these remixes from The Decipher Series
Mike Relm’s 20 minute Return of Dr Octagon megamix
Al Green (The Gray Kid Al Greezy remix)
Ants - The Money Fight Remix (The Money Fight is Marc of Her Space Holiday and Hanni el Khatib)

History Is Bunk vol. 1 & 2
Rating: 8.9
[Hefty; 2006; Electronic]
As somewhat of a companion to the Hefty Digest dual disc we talked about a while back, History Is Bunk: Collaborations, Reinterpretations and New Compositions (volumes 1 and 2) continues celebrating 10 years of exceptional musical output by Chicago’s Hefty Records. But as Digest looked back over the past, the HIB series gives a glimpse of the label’s future with remixes of past material, collaborations between Hefty artists and friends as well as new material from the current roster.
Volume 1 kicks off with the experimental but jungly “Russian Icle Slide” by Slicker (label head John Hughes) which sets the stage for next 50 minutes of highlights. The mellow strings and soft boy/girl vocal harmony of L’Altra’s “The Last” are perfectly complimented by the restrained use of electronic bits and downtempo beat that only stays for the middle peak and the final Radiohead-ish eruption towards the end. This is also an early indication of the wide spectrum of sounds that Hefty’s “electronic” music covers. Dabrye’s brand of hip-hop infused into Some Water And Sun’s “Snowbreaker” is completely contrasted by the delicate piano and jazzy horns (over subtle atmospherics) of “Deluge” by Chris Case featuring Rick Embach and Phil Ranelin. “Mackinaw Peeper Division” by Sts9, Slicker and Retina. It combines a folksy guitar loop, bits of keys, random percussion and distortion over a crunchy bass beat to form a strange futuristic freak-folk.
After packing all that and more into the first disc, Volume 2 slows the pace a bit overall beginning with the (nearly ambient at times) downtempo beat and spacey vocals of “Absentminded” by Spanova. But the pace picks back up again immediately afterwards with the new wave-ish danceable “Compose The Beat” by Plus Device and old school hip-hopishness of Eliot Lipp’s “Heat”. Chris Case and Rick Embach return with very subdued keys, tiny blips and chimes over quiet washes of fuzz on “Axtel” that is counter-balanced by the choppy sound design of Retina. It’s “Anticamera Dei Dubbi”.
Both discs blur the dividing lines of dance, experimental, ambient, hip-hop, pop and jazz, and each track in it’s own unique way. If you like it on the faster, harder side, choose volume 1. If you like it softer and smoother, choose volume 2. If you like many flavors of electronics, get both. You won’t be disappointed. History is bunk? Not Hefty’s history, and by the sounds of these, a bunk future isn’t on the horizon either.

Chosen Lords
Rating: 8.4
[Rephlex; 2006; Electronic]
Busy day at work so I gotta make this a quick one, but then again, it’s a new Aphex Twin record, so what do I really need to say about it? That should tell you in itself whether this is for you or not. And while it’s not exactly a new record, unless you’ve been keeping up with his vinyl only releases under the AFX moniker, it’ll be new to you. Throughout 2005, a wealth of new material was there that you might not have even known about if you weren’t paying attention. Analord Volumes 1 - 11 contained 41 tracks which Mr. James himself has nicely condensed down into a cohesive hour of some of his best work yet. For fans of his more indulgent moments, it might be a bit of a let down, but on the other hand, those who truly love his ability to infuse emotion and imagery into his dance music while at the same time combining the atmospherics of his more ambient works, this might just be your favorite yet.

Glissandro 70
Glissandro 70
Rating: 9.0
[Constellation; 2006; Electronic]
While yesterday’s featured record by About, Glissandro 70’s debut also blurs the line between pop and electronic, but is much further into the electronic territory in terms of it’s sparse, and non-structured use of vocals and choice of old school dance music chant samples - Model 500 and Talking Heads. On the other hand, it has many organic elements such as the abstract combination of acoustic guitars, warm synth, bassy beat and dark samples of apocalyptic folk opener “Something”. Immediately following is the dub-y “Analogue Shantytown”, with it’s intro of “analogue shantytown” being loudly whispered through a harmonica, funky electric guitars, maracas and world beat rhythm while the epic, 13 minute closer, “End West” drifts along with a rapid but subdued, pulsing undercurrent of bass, spacey electronic bits, chimes, pounding drums and horns that builds to a richly textured sound at its peak and winds down to gently guide you out of a truely satisfying listen.
This excellent record began as a commission for an audio blog and evolved over a period of 2 years into a full-fledged, fully realized record. Fortunately for the world, Sandro Perri (Polmo Polpo, Continuous Dick) and Craig Dunsmuir (Guitarkestra) didn’t leave off at that one single track. As with all other Constellation records I’ve heard, truely talented musicians and utterly original.
