Damnit! I can’t believe I slipped on announcing this the day it came out, 6-6-06! What kind of fuckin’ cynic releases his record on 666?! Well, that date only comes around every thousand years and it’s perfect for two things (aside from Satan rising up to take over the Earth). Releasing the new Omen movie. And for the release of Jester’s absurdly ammusing 80s mixtape-style answer to his own question, “Can there be love in the life of a traveling court jester?” After touring with Grand Buffet and as a part of Kid Koala’s turntable band, then being handpicked by Of Montreal as support, I find it hard to believe that Jester’s outlook is too dim. And as he says himself…
After the “It’s not you, it’s me” of 2005 to the “I’ll love you forever” of 2006, I figured it was time to document these heartaches the best way I know how, and I’m not talking MySpace.
sometimes something good comes out of getting your heart trampled in the mud. In this case, it’s Jester’s jumble of mixed emotions illustrated collage-style with chunks of songs and movie quotes that sound like the audio equivalent of ripped photos and used condoms.
Not to blow the “secret track listing” or anything, but in Jester’s… umm, record crates… you’re gonna find everything from Boston and Foreigner to The Dead Milkmen, Prince to Yes, Run DMC, Mix-A-Lot and Jay-Z to Billy Idol, INXS to Donovan and many others sprinkled alongside movie quotes and random scratches in the river of beats that creates a seamless set from beginning to end. Technically, some of the transitions stumble a little toward the start, but when you’re mixing things like Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen” over a funky bass groove and hip-hop beat, it would be forgivable even if it stumbled ten times as much. [note: Not that Jester didn’t mesh those two things beautifully, it’s one of my favorite combos on the whole record]
And I hate to say this, but as much as I love Secret Love, it is a stack of lawsuits waiting to happen (probably starting with the cheesy, 80s-riffic compilation cover with him Photoshopped into it), but Jester with his Texas-sized cahones, puts out a proper mixtape, fuck the lawyers. Good luck Jester. Hope everything works out for ya!
And all you 80s kids, you will rush out and get this before the cease and desists start rolling in, won’t you? If you’ve ever couple skated on skates with four wheels that aren’t in a straight line, you should dig every second of this. Rad shit. Makes me wanna get a VW Rabbit and hack the top off of it like in Thrashin.

Futurism Ain’t Shit To Me 2

Kitty Yo’s back with another edition of Futurism Ain’t Shit To Me. Maybe futurism ain’t, but this is the shit! 17 slammin’ tracks from abstract electronic and cutting edge hip-hop mainstays as well as a handful of newcomers you should do yourself a favor and get acquainted with.
Soul Funk kicks it all off with a chaotic collage of noises and a choppy composition under the rhymes that is starkly contrasted by Forss’ follow up track of jazzy bass grooves, snare heavy beats and twinkling keys. The Tape vs. Infinite Livez’s “The Return of the Menstruating Man” is a grimey, electrified Dizzee Rascal-esque brit hop bouncer while Sole flows in signature style over a spastic, pounding rhythm and synthed out sections. After about a minute, the casios are abandoned for a chanting, dance punk approach (highlight). NQ’s “Disthant” approachs ambient territory followed by Quasimoto’s “Come On Feet”, which has a slow, funky beat and weird samples around his lackadaisical flow. The stomping beat and moderately rapid fire delivery of Slum Village are opposed by the trip-hop-ish and repetitive looping of Malcom Kipe’s “Common Like Baseball Cards”. (Skip 8-bit’s “I-Deez”, fuck, that’s bad!) Jackson And His Computer Band’s “Rock On” is a old school, sliced and diced dancefloor flooder while Stacs of Stamina’s title track from their full length, Trivoli, combines bouncy, euro beats, new wave-ish synths and alternating vocals and tempo changes for one of the most unique sounds I’ve heard in a while. Otto von Schirach’s “Earjuice Synthesis” is an undescribeably weird track with distorted beats and filtered vocals with rusty robotic delivery and silly samples and Dabrye’s remix of Bus’ “Keep Life Right” is unsurprisingly dope… but a bit repititious. Pedestrian is next representin’ Anticon and finally, General Electrics ending the comp in an appropriately disjointed manner full of tuba-like bass, funky undertones, staticy eruptions, growling samples (of a wild cat maybe?), screams and Indian influenced hornlike elements.
As if you couldn’t gather from that, the styles of these guys are all over the place, but they all share common roots in electronica and hip-hop. It’s like a one hour crash course in the various directions hip-hop has evolved, where it’s at and where it’s going.

This is the mother of all compilations for fans of Americana, be it country or folk. Joe Bussard, who recorded and cut the original 78s on his Fonotone Records label has painstakingly collected, remastered and compiled 5 CDs worth of forgotten gems from a simpler time in America for this deluxe release by Atlanta’s Dust To Digital label. From Jug Band to Blues and Country to Bluegrass, sounds are heard that have inspired generations of American artists from the Carter family to Bob Dylan.
When you go scanning through the track listing, don’t bother trying to find a familiar name, unless you’re an obsessed vinyl nut of the highest caliber, you won’t find any. Even if you thought you were that obsessed, you won’t. But no matter, now is your chance to become acquainted with the roots of American music through the sounds, stories and images included in this set. 131 tracks, 160-page perfect-bound book, postcards, record label reproductions, and even a Fonotone bottle opener, all bundled in a cigar box. Well worth the 70-something dollar price tag. That is, of course, if you can appreciate a moonshine jug, comb, spoons or foot stompings as an instrument as much as a banjo or harmonica.
These tracks have received a new lease on life and would never have found their way into your ears and hearts otherwise. This is the first time any of these have been available on CD. And with the mass produced, here today, gone tomorrow cycle of popular music - not to mention the difficulty in running a successful (or even self-sufficient) re-issue label - it’s quite possibly the last.
Much respect, Mr. Bussard and everyone involved in this release. Thank you. Job well done.

To celebrate the 20th release on Portland, Oregon’s Grey Day Productions, they have released a compilation of new, exclusive and unreleased tracks by their roster - past, present and future. But why only 14 tracks? Wouldn’t 20 have made more sense?
Minmae’s Box of Cassettes starts the party off with a highlight track showcasing their dusty brand of alt-country flavored bar rock. Books on Tape brings another high point with their choppy, retro-futuristic combination of classical strings, 80s beats straight outta Breakin’, synths, arcade noises and… sounds like a little tuba? Piney Gir drags you onto the dancefloor with the electro-clash-ish Hello Chanel that is somewhere between Cristina and Sir Alice. Consafos’ Take Me Home comes with a more expected, alt-country twang that goes down better with a cold beer in a dirty glass than a sip of wine. The romping piano saloon swinger Kinky Rag by Mayday reminds me of The Robot Ate Me with it’s distant, vintage instrumentation, lo-fi recording quality and bizarre lyrics. And closing is Pablo’s Triangle (who I seriously hope is part of the future!) with God Lets Us Know, a schizophrenic mix of simplistic programming, organic drumming, strange sampling, explosive riffage and nearly 2 minutes of random horn blows after the beat fades off into silence.
A nice (and accurate) sampling of the Grey Day offerings… and while there is a sprinkling of mellow, singer-songwriter types in the crowd, don’t let the title fool you, this isn’t the soundtrack to munch cheese and swish wine around your mouth to. More suited to pounding Thunderbird in the parking lot outside.

Comomusic Anthology 1990-2005 vol. 1

Now, regional compilations documenting a local scene aren’t something that I can say I’ve seen a lot of. Especially a double disc set with 40 tracks by 40 bands. But, if anybody out there is considering doing such a thing, you better have a look at this Columbia, Missouri collection… they’ve set the bar pretty high. Tons of variety, plenty of highlight moments, and very few times did I have to hit the “next” button. I won’t name names about who I had to skip, but here are some of the high points (and there are more than your 10 bucks worth of them.)
The Sultans’ opener, The Causeways is a gravely, alt-country bar rocker (complete with harmonica and piano) suitable to be found on Bloodshot Records release. The Untamed Youth bring a brief excursion into the retro garage rock territory with I’ll Be Gone. Mahjongg, the only band I’ve actually heard before (and reviewed their releases on Cold Crush Records) provide dance-punk with the tempo of a motorbike and a style anything but “midwestern.” The Secretaries (former band of Mahjongg’s Jeff Carrillo) provide a taste of ska flavored with a little soul on Unmarked Number. Lo-fi pop and punk meets horror soundtrack courtesy of The I Love You But I’m Not In Love With Yous. Bizarre electro-clash experimentation is even represented by Jon Sheffield with a manic mix of electronics, twinkling chimes, video game sounds… and an accordion? And that’s just the first disc…
The second half of the collection begins with spacey, psychedelic indie rockers Oh Yeah. Keith Is My TV’s Bird on the Floor is smoky, trash-disco burner. Trailhead brings the city’s music scene back from the dive bars, where it’s been spending most of it’s time, to the front porch with West County. Eugenics Council brings a gritty electro-punk thrasher, Holocaust Class, before you’re gently drifted on your way by Company Men’s mellow, psych-pop closer, Dark’s Creeping In.
There is, of course, the requisite metal bands I could personally do without, but overall, this is a great snapshot of Columbia’s apparently burgeoning local scene. 40 original bands and nothing feels like regurgitated Franz Ferdinand wannabes. Impressive. Stop and catch a show if you ever happen to be, well, half-way between Kansas City and St. Louis for some reason.
