Seawards
Rating: 9.0
[Type; 2006; (Orchestral) Post-Rock]

I should’ve had this one for you yesterday. It’s the perfect Monday-morning-office-zoning-out record. And not in the ambient, classical or mind-numbing kind of zoning out. The soaring, orchestral post-rock kind that makes your stack of work seem a tiny bit smaller.

After the 2003 net release of the 3 part, 15 minute epic “Wedding Rings & Bullets In The Same Golden Shrine” (see link below), many have been waiting for this proper full length debut, and if I would have heard it before, I would’ve been one of the most anxious of them all. I love a good post-rock record and when one comes across as fresh, it says a lot. And while Wedding Rings… will satisfy those who prefer an experimental slant to their instrumental rock, Seawards comes across as a fully realized vision. It flows better as a whole record than Wedding Rings… does as a single track.

Opener “Driftwood”, is a somber introduction of floating, delicate and weeping instrumentation (that expresses more emotion than most singers voices) to the first of 3 tracks that clock in at over 10 minutes each, “Taking The Stairs Instead Of The Elevator”. It’s a slowly soaring journey through echo-y guitars, glockenspiels and marching drums. More like the sound of someone taking the stairs because they have nothing to look forward to getting to instead of taking them for the cardio workout. “Oceans On Hold”, the next 10 minute-er is a more manic warm-up for the new marathon reworking of “Wedding Rings…” (Parts 1 and 2) that will span almost 30 minutes together later on in the record. “Missles And Mammals” (download below) is the shortest of all tracks and a condensed peek at their sound construction style in it’s least drastic form.

This new version of Wedding Rings… slowly builds from a droning tone into a layered but minimal trance adding subtle changes that creep instead of leap (in part 1) and into the beautiful, theatrical masterpiece that is Part 2. The sound is lush and pristine. Heavily layered but maticulously orchestrated. Morphing and evolving continously, slightly at times and substantially at others, there is more than eonough to justify its running time. Many bands would be happy to leave this one track as their mark on the world, but hopefully these six Swedes aren’t satisfied yet. I’ll now be in the crowd awaiting their next release.

And oh well, so it’s Tuesday… it’ll make a great any-day-of-the-week record and if you order it now, you should have it for next Monday morning. And the next. And the next…
