Sunn0))) is back with a much darker album than 2004’s White2, however it’s still full of the signature Sunn0))) style and quality we’ve come to expect. And it must be said that “style” and “quality” aren’t usually words I would pin to a metal album, but then again, Sunn0))) isn’t normally what comes to mind when most people hear mention of metal.

Opener, Sin Nanna, begins the record in a slowly swelling fashion, similar to White2’s HELL-O)))-WEEN, with a disconnected drone background rising from the pits of hell, distant clattering drums and eerie sounds that could be supernatural… or they could just be your paranoid mind playing tricks on you. Either way, it’s not comforting. The next track, It Took The Night To Believe, begins abruptly, and a bit awkwardly, with it’s combination of slowly grinding bass riff, frantic guitar lead and growling vocals (the one think I just don’t get about metal is the growling). The following 2 tracks (20 minutes combined) get back to the dark, boding atmospherics that I’ve grown to appreciate from these guys. Sounds that paint pictures of howling winds, pouring rain, cries from the tormented and the damned, rumbling, demonic bass bubbling from the black abyss, screeching distortion that sounds like souls being stolen and a level of sound abstraction and experimentation that sets them apart from the posers.

Candlegoat shows an small incorporation of a more orthodox keyboard section while still maintaining the signature droning riff and layers of eerie effects that combine into an unnervingly dark sampling of the Sunn0))) sound. The vocals are sparse, but in my opinion, should be nonexistent.

For the grand finale, Báthory Erzsébet, as the bells slowly toll and feedback subsonically pulsating your woofer, the manical display is about to unfold into perhaps the creepiest fucking thing I’ve ever heard on record. For the chilling… no, petrifying vocal section, guest Malefic was locked in a casket with only a microphone and “a severe sense of claustrophobia” and what you hear is what I imagine the inside of your head would sound like if you were paralyzed and burried alive… unable to scream or make a movement. Dark and disturbing without being brutally unlistenable. This is metal for people like me who hate metal.
