Master DJ and party music compiler is back at it again with the second volume of the Creative Musicians series. If there is only one man out there that should be given the task of searching out and compiling forgotten gems of the golden age of funk and soul, he’s that man. One of his tapestries of finds can have the party hopping and your friends thinking you have the best musical taste with track after track of greatness they never knew existed. (note: pick up Party Keller while you’re at it too.)

1961, in a James Brown-ish performance, comedian Jimmy Lynch performed what is reportedly, but never really proven to be, the first recording containing the word “fuck”. A suitable opener, Fucking Up. Faruk Green’s instrumental funk cut, Faith, would have fit in nicely on The Beastie Boys’ instrumental album, The In Sound From Way Out. Bo Baral provides a surprisingly successful, funky rendition of Light My Fire with No Time To Wallow In The Myrrh. Sorry, Doors purists, this is really great stuff here. (I think even Jim would have approved.) James Lewis’ Manifesto is a jazz-funk, soulful and slightly ska-ish, excursion from the stereoypical funk sound. Winding down the party is Frank Hatchett’s smooth, mellow version of the Rose Royce classic, Wishing On A Star.

For anyone who thinks they know funk, these compilations are essential. Many tracks you either couldn’t find anywhere else or would have to spend much time mining for them… and even more cash to actually get your hands on them. Florian Keller, doing his part (with 19 tracks and an hour playing time) to make you just a little cooler than you were a minute ago.
